Sea Cloud

Sea Cloud

Sea Cloud - then

The SEA CLOUD is truly a queen of the seas. Since her construction as a private yacht in 1931 in Kiel, her elegant appearance and magnificent interior have inspired awe.

Today the four-masted barque is at home on the world’s oceans as a cruise ship extraordinaire. Those who have sailed with her in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, or perhaps across the Atlantic, return to her again and again.

As the largest sailing yacht ever built, the SEA CLOUD was  commissioned by one of Wall Street’s wealthiest businessmen,
E. F.  Hutton.

His wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, heiress to a huge fortune  and herself a successful businesswoman, designed the luxury yacht, with  its then black hull, completely according to her liking.

Sea Cloud - now

During the following decades, the Sea Cloud has been used for various purposes. First as a luxury yacht for E.F. Hutton and Marjorie Merriweather Post, then, after the couple had divorced, as a floating diplomatic palace for her new husband Joseph E. Davies, when he took over as US ambassador in Moscow. The Sea Cloud spend about 21/2 years in active military duty on anti-submarine patrols and as a weather station. Later, the brutal dictator Trujillo would take over the vessel. After his assassination, the vessel has had several owners until it was laid-up in Colón (Panama) for 8 years. In 1978, German Captain Hartmut Paschburg and a group of Hamburg based businessmen acquired the vessel and brought it to Hamburg. In February 1979, Sea Cloud was taken for complete reconstruction back to Kiel. Eight months later, Sea Cloud emerged in new splendor, and this magnificent diva has been at home on the world’s oceans ever since.
